There are many types of kites, and choosing one that will work for you may seem complicated. It really isn't.
You only need to do two things: estimate how much wind you will be flying your kite in and decide what kind of kite you like. To help you estimate wind speeds there is a wind scale at the bottom of the page.
Low wind (4 - 12 mph) kites are dragon kites, most deltas and some diamonds. Medium wind (8 - 18 mph) kites are some deltas and most diamonds. High wind (13 - 24 mph) kites are box kites and parafoils.
Once you have decided whether you need a low, medium or high wind kite, all you have to do is pick one you like. Some people choose a kite because of its shape, some because of the pattern on it, others just like certain colors. It doesn't matter why you choose a kite as long as you like it.
| Wind Scale | |
|---|---|
| 1 - 3 mph | Smoke drifts lazily |
| 4 - 7 mph | Tree leaves rustle |
| 8 - 12 mph | Small flags fly, leaves dance |
| 13 - 18 mph | Trees toss, dust flies |
| 19 - 24 mph | Trees sway |
| 25 - 31 mph | Kite flying is difficult |
