Selecting a Kite

There are many types of kites and choosing one that will work for you may seem complicated. It really isn't.

You only need to do two things: estimate how much wind you will be flying your kite in and decide what kind of kite you like. To help you estimate wind speeds there is a wind scale at the bottom of the page.

Low wind (4 - 12 mph) kites are dragon kites, most deltas and some diamonds. Medium wind (8 - 18 mph) kites are some deltas and most diamonds. High wind (13 - 24 mph) kites are box kites and parafoils.

Once you have decided whether you need a low, medium or high wind kite all you have to do is pick one you like. Some people choose a kite because of its shape, some because of the pattern on it, others just like certain colors. It doesn't matter why you choose a kite as long as you like it.

Wind Scale

 1 - 3 mph Smoke drifts lazily
 4 - 7 mph Tree leaves rustle
8 - 12 mph Small flags fly, leaves dance
13 - 18 mph Trees toss, dust flies
19 - 24 mph Trees sway
25 - 31 mph Kite flying is difficult
