Good Places to Fly Kites

These are all good places to fly kites, or picnic, or take a walk, or just sit and enjoy the beauty of the area.

  1. Olema Hill
On Sir Francis Drake Blvd. approximately 1 1/4 miles east of Olema. Limited parking on the side of the road. Fly your kites from the Bolinas Ridge Trail, on the south side of Sir Francis Drake Blvd.

  2. Tomales Bay Trailhead
Two miles north of Point Reyes Station on Highway One. Part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, the land is still actively used as a cattle ranch. Good kite flying on the hilltop 50 yards to the left of the gate.

  3. South Limantour Beach
From Bear Valley Road take Limantour Road eight miles west to the beach. Turn left just before the main parking lot and go 1/3 of a mile to the small parking lot. Fly your kites on the beach where the dunes flatten out.

  4. Estero Trailhead
Follow signs on Sir Francis Drake Blvd. towards the lighthouse. Approximately two miles past the Pierce Point Road "Y" turn left at the sign for the Estero Trail. Good kite flying in the pasture accessible from the trail or via unlocked cattle gates.

  5. Bull Point Trailhead
Follow signs on Sir Francis Drake Blvd. towards the lighthouse. The Bull Point Trail parking lot is approximately five miles past the Pierce Point Road "Y". There is room for single line kites in the meadow around the parking lot. Brush may make two line kite flying difficult. Overhead power lines may be hazardous when the wind blows from the south.

  6. North Beach
Follow signs on Sir Francis Drake Blvd. towards the lighthouse. The entrance to North Beach is approximately 5 1/2 miles past the Pierce Point "Y". Fly kites on the beach 200 to 300 yards to the right of the restrooms at the north end of the parking lot.

  7. Drakes Beach
Follow signs on Sir Francis Drake Blvd. towards the lighthouse. The road to the Drakes Beach Visitors Center is approximately 8 miles past the Pierce Point "Y". Fly single line kites anywhere away from other people or walk to the left down the beach to where it opens up near Drakes Estero.

  8. Pierce Point
Follow signs on Sir Francis Drake Blvd. towards the lighthouse. Veer right at the Pierce Point "Y" and proceed 10 miles to the end of the road. Kite flying is good in the open headlands above the ranch or walk out the trail and fly open areas. Do not fly kites near, or disturb, the Tule Elk.

  9. Stinson Beach
Approximately 15 miles south of Point Reyes Station on Highway One. Lots of open beaches for kite flying. Fly away from crowds of people.

  10. Dillon Beach
Approximately 20 miles north of Point Reyes Station. Take Highway One to Tomales and follow signs to Dillon Beach where there is a day use fee. Plenty of room on the beach for kite flying.

  11. Doran Beach
Approximately 40 miles north of Point Reyes Station on Highway One. Part of the Sonoma Coast State Beaches system, the entrance is just south of Bodega Bay. Dry camping (no hookups) is available. Kite fly on the wide flat beach.
